The 2009 Herbstreit Varsity Football Series kicked off on Saturday afternoon at Ohio Stadium in
Columbus. The second part of a doubleheader featured an outstanding match-up between Hilliard
Davidson and Westerville South. No strangers to close games, Davidson once again came up with a big
play at the right time as Jake Trubiano’s pass deflection on a two-point conversion held off a late charge
by South and sealed a 21-20 for Davidson.

“I’m obviously extremely happy to win against a great team like Westerville South,” said a relieved
Davidson head coach Brian White. “They are really, really good and it wouldn’t surprise me if they go 9-1
and are in the playoffs. I think they’re really good this year so we feel really fortunate to come out of here
with a win.”

Davidson got off to a great start by forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff. Just a few plays later,
Trubiano rolled to his right and hit senior running back Spencer Delande in the end zone for the 9-yard
score to open up a 7-0 lead.

South would answer late in the first quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run by junior Jayshon Jackson.
Jackson had a big day for South and really carried the offense throughout the day.

Davidson would answer right back with a score and again it was Trubiano at the forefront. This time it was
on the ground as he took the quarterback keeper 8 yards to put Davidson up 14-7 with eight seconds left
in the first quarter.

A short touchdown run in the second half by junior running back Rico Butler put Davidson up 21-7 and
things looked to be pretty much in hand at that point. However, that was not case as the South offense
really started to click in the fourth quarter. Jackson once again found the end zone for South, this time on
a tough, 3-yard run to cut the lead to 21-14.

With Davidson’s offense sputtering, South once again took advantage. With just five seconds left in
regulation, senior receiver Jack Tomlinson made an outstanding leaping catch over Trubiano in the back
of the end zone for a touchdown.

“I thought I had the interception for sure,” said Trubiano of the play. “He just came right over my head
and I tipped it but it was just a great play by him.”

Trubiano would get the last laugh. South head coach Rocky Pentello decided to go for two and the win
and the slant pass to Tomlinson was broken up beautifully by Trubiano to win the game for Davidson.
“I knew they were going to try and come back to that same wide receiver because he’s a good wide
receiver,” Trubiano explained. “I was like, ‘I gotta do something’, and I just came up and broke it up.”

With a win in the books, Davidson now travels to Brookhaven on Friday to face a tough Bearcats squad
that has played the Wildcats extremely tough the last two seasons.

Coffman pounds Liberty
As one of the pre-season favorites in Region 3, Coffman certainly cemented that status on Sunday
Afternoon at Ohio Stadium as the Rocks blasted Olentangy Liberty 52-0 to start Day 2 of the Herbstreit
Varsity Football Series.

It took most of the first quarter for Coffman to get into a rhythm, but once that happened, it was a thing of
beauty. Shortly after an interception by linebacker Brett Buehler, senior running back Shaun Jones
plunged in from six yards out to get the scoring started.

“We started out a little bit shaky, but maybe that was because of the environment,” said Coffman head
coach Mark Crabtree. “It was a little bit different down here than a normal football game, there’s no doubt
about it. Once we got the interception and got them deep down in their territory, that helped to settle us
down a bit.”

Once Coffman settled down, there was little that Liberty could do about it. The Rocks reeled off three
touchdowns in the final five minutes of the first half to take a commanding 28-0 lead into the break.

The second half brought more of the same. On Coffman’s opening drive of the half, junior quarterback
Cole Stoudt hit Jones on a beautiful pass down the field for a 19-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 35-
0.

Jones finished his day with four total touchdowns on 117 yards of offense.
“He did a really good job for us,” Crabtree said. “I think you’ll see a lot more out of him (the rest of the
season).”

Junior Cole Stoudt got his 2009 season off to a strong start as well, finishing 13-for-20 with 168 yards
and a touchdown. He also added 66 yards on the ground as well as a touchdown on a quarterback
sneak.

The Rocks would tack on a field goal to make 38-0 before pulling many of the starters. A six yard
touchdown run by junior Patrick Moreland and a blocked punt return for a touchdown by senior Jimmy
Happ pushed the game to its final score of 52-0.
Pickerington Central knocks off nationally ranked Orange Lutheran (CA)
After a sluggish start, Pickerington Central re-grouped and played one of the finest games of the week in
all of Ohio on Sunday afternoon at Ohio Stadium. Early penalties and mistakes put the Tigers in a small
hole but when the dust settled the Tigers came out on top, 28-14 over the 29th ranked team in the
country according to ESPN.

“We represented Central Ohio, and Ohio in general,” said Central head coach Jay Sharrett. “It’s gonna
be a good time in Pick town tonight.”

Set up by a long punt return, Orange Lutheran receiver Shawn Rohr caught a pass over the middle from
Bobby Wheatley for a 6-yard score to put the Lancers up 7-0 late in the first.

The Tigers would respond quickly as just over a minute later, junior running back Tyler ‘speedy’
Hammond broke a 13-yard touchdown run to cap off a 6-play , 80-yard scoring drive to tie the game at 7.
Hammond wasn’t finished. A few minutes later, he bounced another run outside and took it 5-yards for
the score to put the Tigers up 14-7 with 9:36 left in the first half.

With the fast and aggressive Tigers defense swarming, the Lancers really struggled to move the ball for
much of the game.  The Tigers offense was able to take advantage once again as Malcolm Pannell took
the quick pass from junior quarterback Grant Hammond, made a move, and raced 25-yards into the end
zone to put the Tigers up 21-7 late in the first half.

To the Lancers credit, they answered right back as Wheatley capped off an 80-yard drive with a 1-yard
rushing score to make 21-14 going into half.

Both defenses really dictated the play in the second half and it was obvious that things were going to
come down to which offense could beat the blitz and make a big play. It was the Tigers’ offense that
would do just that. With just under eight minutes left in the game, senior receiver Jarred Miller took a
wide receiver screen and weaved in and out of traffic before getting loose and rumbling 78-yards to the
Orange Lutheran 3-yard line. The very next play, senior running back Wuan Tatum pounded it in to put
the Tigers up 28-14 and all but sealed the game.

While the offense performed very well for Central, it was defense that really ruled the day. Orange
Lutheran’s potent offense was held to just 184 total yards. The key to the defense was a series of
aggressive blitzes.

“Traditionally, we’re a little under-sized and you can’t ask smaller players to sit back and play read
defense,” Sharrett explained. “We blitz everybody. We blitz linebackers, we blitz defensive backs, we try
to flood gaps with players. A lot of people think it’s just a crazy defense and we’re just running and going
but it’s just the opposite. It takes more scouting hours and it takes more film study.”

Central will have little time to celebrate as they will have to turn around on a short week and play a
talented Springfield squad on Friday night.
